Lady Lions Participate in Community Service Activities

The Lady Lions visited The Village retirement community and the Houserville Elementary School

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 12, 2009 ‹ The Penn State Lady Lions took advantage of their bye date to give back to the very supportive State College community. The Lady Lions visited The Village retirement community for dinner on Thursday, Jan. 8 and then addressed the Houserville Elementary School on Friday, Jan. 9.

At The Village, the Lady Lions had dinner with the residents, many of who are avid Lady Lion fans. Following dinner, the Lady Lions spent time introducing themselves and even had a trivia contest with the residents, who could win tickets to Sunday¹s game against Indiana or a Penn State Lady Lion Basketball visor.

The Lady Lions have recently started a relationship with Houserville Elementary in which the student-athletes will volunteer in classrooms throughout the year. The kickoff event for this relationship was a school-wide assembly in which the Lady Lions spoke with the students about goals, teamwork and responsibility and shared one of their favorite team-building activities, ³the human knot².

The Lady Lions have a long history of community service and have won the ³small squad² CHAMPS Cup each of the award¹s three years of existence. The CHAMPS Cup is awarded annually to the small squad (20 or fewer members) and large squad (20 or more members) that participate in the most community service hours.

The Lady Lions hit the road for games at Purdue on Thursday, Jan. 15 and at Michigan State on Sunday, Jan. 17 before returning home to face Wisconsin on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. The Wisconsin game will be $1 dog night for those fans in attendance. For information on Lady Lion Basketball tickets, call the Penn State ticket office at 814-865-5555.

The 2009 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State proudly supported by Mimi Barash Coppersmith (formerly known as THINK PINK Day) will take place on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m., as the Lady Lions take on Iowa in the Bryce Jordan Center. The game can be seen on www.bigtennetwork.com. The first two Pink Zone events have raised more than $50,000 for breast cancer awareness. This year¹s fundraising efforts will benefit the Penn State Hershey Breast Cancer Institute, the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. For more information on the Pink Zone at Penn State, visit the official Pink Zone website at www.gopsusports.com/pinkzone.
