MADISON, Wis. – Alyssa Karel, a sophomore on the University of Wisconsin women's basketball team, has been named to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 5 first team. Karel will now be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors. Karel, a 5-7 guard, is the Badgers' leading scorer this season, averaging 12.9 points per game. She has scored in double figures in 19 of 23 games this season, leading the team in scoring in 13 games. Karel ranks seventh in the Big Ten in scoring average, sixth in 3-pointers made (1.7/game) and eighth in 3-point field goal percentage at 36.4. She also adds 3.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Karel was named the most valuable player of the Paradise Jam in November, scoring the game-winning basket in Wisconsin's win over then-No. 6 Baylor. The pre-nursing major has a 3.80 cumulative grade point average. She is a two-time member of the dean's honor list. In order to qualify for the honor team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or above and be a starter or important reserve.
