Minnesota snapped a three-game losing streak and evened its Big Ten record at 1-1 with a 69-55 win over Penn State on Thursday in Williams Arena. Led by Emily Fox with 15 points, the Golden Gophers had five players in double figures and improve their overall mark to 9-4.
Joining Fox in double figures was Katie Ohm with 14 points, including four three-point field goals, Ashley Ellis-Milan with 12 points, Kiara Buford with 11 and Jackie Voigt with 10. Ellis-Milan pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
The Gophers owned a 33-27 lead at halftime and seemed to have their offensive game intact as Ohm netted a trio of three-pointers and Fox two triples, one causing the Gopher senior who had struggled so mightily versus Wisconsin on Monday to pump her fist in the air. Brittany McCoy tallied all five her assists in the first half.
Penn State (6-7, 1-2) opened the second half with a basket by Mashea Williams to pull within four points, but Minnesota answered with back-to-back three-pointers by Buford and Fox to take a 10-point lead at 39-29 with 17:16 remaining.
The Gophers' lead would hover around 10 points for most of the second half. The Lady Lions closed to within seven points just once on a jumper by Williams to make the score 58-51, but Penn State would manage just four points in the remainder of the game.
Fox banked in a driving lay-up from the left baseline, drew the foul and converted the three-point play to return the Gophers' lead to double digits for good at 63-51 with 5:19 remaining. The Gophers made four of six free throws late in the game to maintain their advantage.
Tyra Grant and Williams shared game honors for Penn State with 12 points a piece.
The Gophers travel to Illinois on Saturday for an 11 a.m. game that will be televised by CBS. |
